I am upgrading my system. Wondering if I could get some of your opinions and
reason why on the following hardware.

First possible configuration -
Barton 2600+, 333FSB, 512k cache (1.917GHz actual) mated to a ASUS A7N8X E
Deluxe ( http://tinyurl.com/mknh )

My thoughts - The 512k cache is my main focus. The mobo supports up to a
400mhz FSB with Dolby Digital 5.1 for ear candy.
AGP 8X will support my 9600 pro.
Q-fan - I have a ThermalTake Volcano7 solid copper cooling fan (
http://tinyurl.com/4jgno ) . It connects to a power supply lead with a
secondary two wire cable that connects to the mobo... Anyone know if this
mobo above will regulate the speed?

Second possible configuration -
Sempron 2600+, 333Mhz FSB, 256K cache (1.833 Ghz actual) mated to a Asus
K8V-X ( http://tinyurl.com/52x87 )

My thoughts - The 256k cache is a concern. Does the "800MHz HyperTransport"
make up for the difference?
Is the "800MHz HyperTransport" similar to Intel's HyperThreading?
Mobo supports up to 400mhz FSB.
AGP 8X will support my 9600 pro.
"Cool ''''n'''' Quiet" - Same as above. Is my cooler compatible?

I am planning on swapping over all my hardware ( Antec dual fan 400 watt
power supply, two sticks of Crucial pc2100 266 ddr memory which I will
upgrade, ATI 9600 PRO 128mb ddr 8X vid card, ThermaTake Volcano 7 cooler, SB
Live "not value" if needed, and two UDMA100 hard drives.

Just for curiosity, I run an AMD 1800+ XP right now.

Any thoughts offered would be greatly appreciated.

If my question would be better suited for a different group or website, I
apologize in advance and would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Thanks.

Grim

You can forget this one. You can't put a Sempron 2600+ which is socket A
on a socket 754 (KCool board. And secondly, if you go with a K8 cpu get a
board with a newer chipset that has a PCI lock, not this one.

No, since all K8 have a HT bus. The cache wouldn't matter that much in a
K8.

No, basically it's just another name for a FSB.

Nothing is in this setup which won't work.

<SNIP>

Thanks for the information, the link there is very informative. I had no
idea they named two different processors the same name.

Back to the drawing board.

Is the Sempron 64-bit or not? - Hi, I am a little bit confused... ok, ok, a lot... is the Sempron a 64-bit processor like the Athlon64? Thanks! P.S. Please post all replies here... my e-mail is not real... sorry... just let me know if you want my real e-mail address... :^)

Sempron 2400+ Settings - Just met one of these things for the first time. By default, shows as XP 1000. Clocked up to show XP2000 and still stable with temp of 40C. Simple question, where should I leave it without contravening the manufacturers settings? Doubt if it...

(OT?) Athlon XP or Sempron? - Wanting to build a new machine and can't find info on AMD site comparing XP with Sempron. Since the Sempron is much cheaper for supposedly the same speed chip there must be a reason? Anyone know what the differences are? Thanks Xeno

athlon vs sempron - Is the sempron 2600+ the same as the Athalon 2600+. thanks

Socket A & 754 Sempron caution. - I don't know if this is well known or not but AMD has used different criteria in giving the Sempron line of cpu's its PR numbers. So don't buy a Sempron 3100+ expecting it to be faster than an Athlon 64 3000+. Because it's nowhere close to as fast. AMD..
